Employs 5 full time and as many 8 seasonal employees
Works with local schools on science projects about the Klawock Watershed
Currently, associated with two projects (Heenya Community Association, Alaska State Fish and Game/U.S. Forest Service) assessing spawning conditions in the watershed and sockeye habitat.
Works with the Klawock Watershed Council (POWHA is also a member) to mitigate impact from the timber harvest and road building on spawning habitat.
Obtained funds(from Sustainable Salmon Funds, U.S. Congress and State of Alaska Governor's Office)  to double coho productions to 5 million eggs per year,  continue our sockeye enhancement, and mitigate the impact of the Canadian Salmon Treaty.
Planning of two chinook projects with one proposed for Coffman Cove and one at Port St. Nicholas on Prince of Wales Island.
Two additional projects are in the works, one includes the use of alternative energy for daily operation and a value-added seafood project.
POWHA is a very effiicient operation raising twice as many salmon smolt per dollar spent than the Alaskan average for hatcheries.

*  Salmon are anadromous, meaning they migrate from fresh to saltwater and return to fresh water to spawn.

*  Hatchery coho return to the Klawock River system   approximatly 1 1/2 years after release from the hatchery into  saltwater. Pink return after a year in saltwater. Sockeye spend 2-3 years in saltwater. Chum spend 1 - 4 years in saltwater.

*  Steelhead are capable of spawning multiple times
before dying.
